Research from the New Economics Foundation (NEF) reveals the extent to which EU countries rely on fish from outside their waters to maintain their high levels of fish consumption:
- The EU27 brought forward its fish dependence day by 6 days, meaning it is less able to meet internal fish demand with EU catches.
- The EU27 now becomes fish dependent on 5th July, forward from 11th July, driven by a 475,000 tonnes reduction in domestic supply.
- The UK becomes fish dependent considerably later than the EU27 overall, on 12 September. This has been fairly stable for the past few years now.
