Newly released Stricken Cargo Ship heading for Shark Reef

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is deeply concerned that one of the most pristine parts of Australia’s ocean is at risk from the broken down container vessel ID Integrity.

The cargo ship is drifting towards Shark and Vema Reefs around 175 nautical miles north-east of Cairns. These isolated reefs are important for marine life including sharks and rays, corals and sponges. They host unique deep reef habitats and recent surveys there have found species new to science. They are also an internationally renowned dive site supporting important tourism businesses.
